Abstract: THE EFFECTS OF FINANCIAL LEVERAGE ON CORPORATE PERFORMANCE
The objective of this study is to examine the effects of financial leverage on the performance of corporations. Specifically, it aims to understand how leverage influences profitability, assess the risk implications of high leverage, and determine optimal leverage levels for corporate performance. A survey research design is selected to gather data from corporate financial officers. Using Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 250 companies was chosen to ensure representativeness. The study focuses on publicly traded companies in Lagos, Nigeria, known for their varied leverage practices. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument is 0.86. Findings suggest that while financial leverage can enhance corporate performance through increased profitability, it also heightens financial risk, particularly in volatile markets. Recommendations include adopting balanced leverage strategies that optimize performance while minimizing risk exposure.
